Core thermal design model

Having established both the power distribution and flow distribution in the core we now move to describing a model in regard to the thermal analysis of the core, ie a model which enables us to calculate the temperatures in the fuel elements. We assume that the fuel element consists of a number of clad cylindrical fuel rods.

The fuel temperature is of major importance since it both affects the neutronics behavior of the core and limits the maximum thermal power output which can be safely generated in order to prevent center fuel melt. Furthermore, the clad temperature should be kept sufficiently low in order to prevent excessive corrosion and failure of the clad material.
